The Commonwealth Foundation celebrated a major victory for worker freedom with the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in the Janus v. AFSCME case, which struck down forced union fees for government workers. Now, groups including The Fairness Center and Americans for Fair Treatment are working to educate Pennsylvania public workers on their new rights and defend them in court.
Meanwhile, Governor Wolf signed a state budget for the first time, avoiding an extended battle and giving up on tax hikes. While it’s a breath of fresh air for Pennsylvania’s budget to bed early, the budget avoided crucial reforms by shifting significant spending to the “shadow budget.”
Heading into the fall, there is still much work to be done. That’s why we will continue working to create opportunity through education savings accounts, to foster fairness in the political process through paycheck protection, and to transition Pennsylvanians from dependency to self-sufficiency through welfare work requirements.
