Today, teachers across Pennsylvania are forced to pay for union activities that many don’t support. To many, they feel manipulated by unions that don’t represent their interests or beliefs. The majority of teachers have never had the opportunity to vote for their union. Yet, these same unions force teachers to pay hundreds of dollars a year to keep their jobs!
So it doesn’t come as a surprise that a recent Rasmussen poll found that only 25% of current and former members think their union leaders represent them well.
Teachers deserve more, teachers deserve to be heard.
Based on the PSEA’s own financial reports, a measly 17 percent of the union’s spending went to ‘representational activities’ in 2013-2014. And that’s not all: The union’s ‘ghost teachers’ are paid for performing union duties instead of being in the classroom educating students. These ‘ghost teachers’ accrue seniority and pension credits, leaving other teachers to pick up the slack back at school.
Teachers should have the freedom to choose what is best for them personally and professionally—whether that’s with the union or without it.
It’s time to let teachers be free to teach.
