Time to End Union Violence

Did you know that it’s illegal to stalk, harass, or threaten to use violence (and yes, weapons of mass destruction) in Pennsylvania…except if you’re a labor union (or management) in a dispute?  Then it’s quite alright to commit all those acts, thanks to a loophole in state law.

Thankfully, two new bills would get rid of unions’ carte blanche for crime.

  1. HB 1154, sponsored by Rep. Ron Miller (R-York) would close the loophole permitting unions and management to stalk and use violence during a labor dispute.
  2. HB 1470, sponsored by Rep. Stephen Bloom (R-Cumberland), would protect employers during a labor dispute by strengthening their ability to enforce court injunctions against picketers who take part in unlawful activities such as blocking entrances at a worksite, flattening tires or preventing employers from coming and going on their own property.

Both bills are currently in the House Judiciary Committee, and it’s a no-brainer that they should pass. No group—unions or otherwise—should be protected by law from the consequences of committing crimes.
