Nine of 11 Fastest Growing Jobs Drilling Related

Nationwide workforce data shows oil and gas extraction jobs growing at rates far above any other sector of the American economy. According to EMSI’s latest quarterly employment data, six of the fastest growing fields are related to oil and gas; each is expected to grow anywhere from 9 to 11 percent this year, in an otherwise stagnant economy. Nine of the top 11 fastest-growing jobs are tied in some way to oil and gas extraction.

The article goes on to highlight Pennsylvania’s boom:

Since 2008, Pennsylvania has added more than 15,000 jobs in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industry, a 41% jump. Only Texas and Oklahoma have added more of these jobs in the last three years.

We blogged last month about the impressive employment numbers from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. Overall, gas drilling and related employment is up 26.3 percent from last year while overall state employment is up only 1.4 percent. Over the past three years, employment in gas drilling increased by nearly 94 percent, while total jobs in Pennsylvania dropped 2 percent.

And if that isn’t enough good news, consider that Marcellus Shale drillers spent about $411 million in the past three years to rebuild Pennsylvania’s roads.
