Charles Mitchell President & CEO

Charles Mitchell first became associated with Commonwealth Foundation when he was a college newspaper editor under attack for defending the freedom of speech and Matt Brouillette, CF's leader at that time, came alongside him. He became a CF investor in 2006, joined the staff as COO in 2010, and became CEO in 2016.

Charles grew up in the Philadelphia area, in a family of railroaders, teachers, and small businesspeople, and graduated from Pennsylvania's public schools, the Koch Associate Program, the Claremont Institute's Publius Fellowship, and Bucknell University. In addition to his CF responsibilities, he serves as an elder of his family's church, on the boards of USA250 and Americans for Fair Treatment, and as an alumni fellow of the Bucknell Project for American Leadership and Citizenship. In 2014, he received State Policy Network's Overton Award, and in 2017, City & State PA named him one of its 40 Under 40 Rising Stars.

Before joining CF, Charles served the American Council of Trustees and Alumni and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and interned at the Heritage Foundation. He lives in the Harrisburg area with his wife, their four daughters, and a very faithful Subaru, which carries him and CF's vision to every corner of Pennsylvania.
