Charles Mitchell President & CEO

Charles Mitchell first became associated with Commonwealth Foundation when he was a college newspaper editor under attack for defending the freedom of speech and Matt Brouillette, CF's leader at that time, came alongside him. This marked the beginning of a partnership that first resulted in Charles becoming a CF investor, then returning to his home state to serve as CF's COO, and ultimately assuming his current post as CEO.

In addition to his CF responsibilities, Charles has helped launch the Fairness Center, a public interest law firm that offers free legal services to those wronged by public employee union officials; advises a number of public policy organizations whose work complement CF's in Pennsylvania and nationally; and serves as an elder of his family's church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America. In 2014, he received State Policy Network's Overton Award, and in 2017, City & State PA named him one of its 40 Under 40 Rising Stars.

Before joining CF, Charles served the American Council of Trustees and Alumni and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and interned at the Heritage Foundation. He grew up in the Philadelphia area, in a family of railroaders, teachers, and small businesspeople, and graduated from Pennsylvania's public schools, the Koch Associate Program, the Claremont Institute's Publius Fellowship, and Bucknell University.

Charles now lives in the Harrisburg area with his wife, their four daughters, and a very faithful Subaru, which carries him and CF's vision to every corner of our great state.
