Traditional Energy Fuels Pennsylvania's Economy

Ed Tyrrell posted on 9/2/2010 8:19:00 AM
Pennsylvania could certainly benefit economically from the continued use of coal. Why isn't the coal industry committing more resources to find a way to burn coal cleanly and at competitive prices? A bit off of the bottom line now for more research might mean the salvation of an industry. It would seem with all of the technology available that given enough industry funded research, a clean coal method could be found. Here's a chance for the good old free enterprise system to shine and save an industry, rather than just complaining about subsidized competition.

Kim, the Marcellus Shale has existed for millions of years, and we've known about the gas trapped within the formation for a long time. However, we've never had a technology that could economically extract the gas- until now. The gas is trapped a mile below the surface in brittle rock, and it is geologically impossible for it to migrate upwards and contaminate water supplies. In fact, we blogged on this very issue: http://www.commonwealthfoundation.org/policyblog/detail/physics-supports-fracking-safety

I have a few questions that could prove helpful if used properly. Has this Marsella Shale gas always been there? if so why has it not been discovered before? or has it just been so far down below the surface and has now risen to the level that it is now feasible to retrieve? Is the level of the gas rising so that the water wells these people want to protect could actually be damaged by not drilling and lowering the level of the gas? Is it rising to the point that the wells would be affected in a shorter period of time if it is not drilled?

Until we have reform in the Political process, lobbying reform, conflict of interest reform, ethics reform, an hold our Politicians to a higher standard and be accountable, nothing will ever change. We have the best form of government in the world, just the wrong people.

R&D grants for cheaper fuel or power supplies are fine, but grants to build facilities to use methods that have been repeatedly proven to be failures is an unacceptable behavior.

May 23

We here at CF are proud to be part, along with Gov. George M. Leader, his family, and many others, of a transpartisan coalition favoring "real corrections reform, right now." That is why this morning, I attended the release of the recommendations of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative working group. At ...
