Taxing Tuition: The Future of Higher Education?

Rich Recker posted on 12/29/2009 2:10:00 PM
While I generally do not agree with the idea of taxing students, it amazes me that the students (and administrations) rose up to fight this with such vehemance, while they sit by idly year after year while the administrators continue to get outrageous raises and no one says a word..how hypocrital of the administrators and how stupid of the students! This comment, coming from a parent of 3 recent college graduates.

College is expensive enough without adding a tuition tax. If they quit subsidizing the the non essential programs, the city [like the state, and federal governments] would be able to make it on the tax base they already have. So many of our elected officials have either never held a private sector job or it has been so long since they did they have forgotten what the average citizens faces.

At what point does the idea of taxation without representation come in? If you are a student who goes to a Pgh based university or college but is not a formal resident (no voting privileges, which many would be).

Turn on the Fiscal Fire Hose

February 9

Since Gov. Corbett unveiled his 2012-13 budget Tuesday, we've noted how it reduces overall spending for only the second time in 40 years. We've also explained that despite cuts, we're facing a four-alarm fiscal inferno because of inevitable and rapidly rising costs in debt, pensions, welfare and corrections ...
