How to Talk to Your Legislator
Let your legislators know what is important to their constituents. They were elected to serve you-keep them accountable to their jobs.
Use one or all of these contact methods - visits or calls are most effective, as lawmakers know you care enough about the issue to put the extra time in:
- Visit their district or Capitol offices.
- Call their offices.
- Write a letter.
- Write an e-mail.
Communicating with your legislators:
- Stick to one main point that you would like to get across
- Use personal examples (negative or positive) to show the effects of their decisions
- State how they should vote on particular bills
- Thank them when they do a good job - lawmakers will be more likely to listen to criticism that way
Information to include in any correspondence:
- Name
- Occupation, e.g. businessman, farmer, homemaker, teacher
- Home address
- E-mail address
- Phone number
