Making a Bad Bill Worse

Following protests by policy and firefighter unions, the Pennsylvania House will delay a vote on HB 1828, the so-called municipal pension reform bill, likely until Thursday.

House Democrat leaders are suggesting changing to the bill to protect unions “ability to do collective bargaining.”

The problem with this mentality is that it makes a bad bill even worse – it would currently allow municipalities take already underfunded public pensions and pay less into them; these proposed changes would add to the ideas that local government should increase unaffordable pension benefits as well.  Here is the analysis of HB 1828 in its current form.
