It is natural that the types of business in an economy evolve. We have however, over the past 40 years or so, seen the intentional manipulation of our economy from being a nation that produces products to a nation that consumes products. The nation has been deluded into thinking that by going deeper and deeper into debt to consume things, that somehow we will become more prosperous. We can plainly see in our current economic disaster, that being a consumer/service oriented economy with citizens programmed and encouraged to go further and further into debt so they can have it all NOW, instead of saving and investing for the future, has led us to the point where we must borrow other peoples money to sustain our lifestyles. Well, we're running out of other peoples money and if we don't bring back industries that actually produce something and if we don't bring back fiscal discipline in both the public and private sector we are doomed to experience the total collapse of our nation.
