The privatization of Pennsylvania's liquor stores is an idea that has floated around the halls of Harrisburg for decades. Privatizing Pennsylvania's state-owned liquor stores is particularly relevant today given the drop in Pennsylvania tax collections and long-term taxpayer obligations. State Representative Mike Turzai has announced legislation to privatize Pennsylvania's state wine and spirit stores. The legislation would auction off 750 retail store licenses and 100 wholesale distributor licenses to the highest bidder.
