Pennsylvania’s Edifice Complex:
Public School Spending & Cyber Schools

featuring

Robert Maranto, PhD
Associate Professor of Political Science, Villanova University

Greg White
President, Greg White Consulting

Pennsylvania taxpayers spend over $21 billion annually on K-12 public schools, including over $2 billion on construction and debt.  These costs continue to drive up property taxes for homeowners, yet some lawmakers and many public school officials are blaming cyber schools—which account for only 0.5% of total K-12 spending and educate students for far less per-pupil than school districts—for escalating school taxes.

Dr. Robert Maranto, professor at Villanova and adjunct scholar at the Commonwealth Foundation, will discuss Edifice Complex: Where Has All the Money Gone?, a report on Pennsylvania’s public school spending and cyber schools.  Greg White, Education Policy Director under Governor Tom Ridge, will provide an inside perspective on school funding and the role cyber schools and other schools of choice play in Pennsylvania’s K-12 system.
